CAN - Controller Area Network

CAN Controller–area network (CAN or CAN-bus) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and other devices to communicate with each other. CAN is a multi-master broadcast serial bus standard for connecting electronic control units (ECUs). The message based CAN protocol, designed specifically for automotive applications, is also used in other areas such as industrial automation and medical equipment.
Later standardized in ISO 11898, development of the CAN-bus started originally in 1983 at Robert Bosch GmbH. The protocol was officially released in 1986. The first CAN controller chips, produced by Intel and Philips, came on the market in 1987. CAN is one of five protocols used in the OBD-II vehicle diagnostics standard.

CAN interface test module GOEPEL Electronics offers various CAN products, including Series 61 - programmable communication controllers, such as PXI 6153, PCI 6153, USB 6153, and the stand-alone versions basicCAN 6153 and basicCAN 61 PLUS.
